Alessa's Germany Experience, Day 29 - One Small Step at a Time
We found out today that it's going to take Alessa at least six months before she'll be able to walk on her own. She has to build up her leg muscles. They really atrophied from not walking for three years. She cannot stand without support. She won't be rid of the wheelchair for a while yet. She'll need a walker and physical therapy when she gets home.
Sabine helped Alessa walk by standing right beside her and holding her up. She had to wrap Alessa's left ankle because it kept clicking very loudly from lack of use. She said that with exercise, the clicking will go away.
Alessa had a good workout session in the gym today, but she had no idea that walking would be so hard. She has to take it one small step at a time.
It was just great seeing her on her feet again!

We are so thrilled for your progress. It seems often that time needed for getting back on your feet is proportional to the amount of time off them. I've seen that over and over again. Try to be patient. But time and perserverence will pay off!! You've come a long way (literally and figuratively), Alessa. Looking forward to seeing you back at home. Stay strong! It takes out of you to work these muscles again. Be careful not to overdo also. So sorry we haven't been able to reach mom and dad on Skype anymore. We wish you all well!! You go girl!!

Hi Guys!
Here's a little motivational poem that has helped me when times were rough:
"Take one step and then the next,
You learned to walk that way.
Approach your life in little
steps and take it day by day."
Continue to walk towards your goals and dreams, Alessa. We're all here to support and encourage you along the way. We love you!
