Alessa's Germany Experience, Day 18 - Awakening

Alessa woke up today! We were so lucky to be there when it happened. She opened her eyes at 4:30. She stared straight ahead and didn't focus on anything for a while. Eventually, as we spoke to her and called her name, she was able to move her eyes in our direction and look at us. I can't begin to describe the happiness we felt at that moment when we knew that she recognized us.

She can't attempt to talk because she's on the respirator, but she was able to squeeze my finger and then Steve's finger when we each took turns putting a finger in her hand. (It brought back memories of when she was a baby.)

She's very weak and she can hardly move. Squeezing our fingers was a very big effort for her. She's still under sedation. She was in a
nd out of sleep while we were there. The nurse said Alessa will come out of the coma a little at a time, not all at once. That's fine by us. We'll be waiting for her.

The end of the coma.

  • Hi to Alessa and Family!

My name is Lindsay Spengler and I also had the coma treatment in Mexico! I am also one of Dr. Schwartzman's patients. It is wonderful that we were given this opportunity to be FREE from pain!! I was unable to eat for five years, was in respiratory failure and all that goes with RSD as you all CERTAINLY understand!!! Now, I am eating, sleeping, walking and even throwing a ball for a short period of time! I was and am a softball player. I know this has been a really tough road BUT IT DOES GET BETTER as you are all seeing already. And I thank God for that!!!

I will be praying for Alessa and you all! From all of us RSDers thank you to Alessa's Mom and Dad. We could never do it without you guys!! It is people like you that keep us going and fighting hour by hour and day by day! I can hear the love and support even thousands of miles away! I know my Mom and Dad were also there for me. After spending 3 and a half of the last 5 years in the hospital they hardly never left my side. THANK YOU!!!!

And I just wanted to tell Alessa what a great job she is doing! It is so hard to keep fighting through excruciating pain and symptoms and really torture that few in this world understand! Especially when there is nothing on the horizon that we can see that may help. Well, she is right where she needs to be and finally getting the chance she so much deserves to claim her lift back and pursue her dreams! GREAT JOB ALESSA!

If you need ANYTHING just let me know. My e-mail address is centerfield30@comcast.net. If not that's fine to, I will just keep you all in my prayers!

    Lots of Love and Prayers!

    Lindsay Spengler

I do have a website that I also update and my mom started a long time ago. Please do not feel obligated in any way! I just know Mom and I got very bored at some points so I thought I'd let you know. www.caringbridge.org/visit/lindsay
