Alessa's Reach for Recovery

Alessa's Germany Experience, Day 15 - Glitch

When we walked into Alessa's room today, we noticed an additional machine attached to her bed. When we asked the nurse about it, she told us that the doctor would speak to us. Dr. Carina told us that air got into the I.V. line that goes into Alessa through the area above her right clavicle. This air went into the area between her right lung and the covering over her lung. They noticed this when they were doing their routine check-up. They took a CT Scan to see what was going on. Her right lung isn't working as well as her left lung. They put in a drainage tube to take out the air. It could take four or five days. This was a glitch we certainly weren't expecting. They told us that with this coma procedure, any of a number of things could happen because it's so risky. They assured us that she should be just fine.

As of now, they don't expect her to wake up before Saturday or Sunday. She's been given an extra day of ketamine. The ketamine will stop late in the day tomorrow (Thursday). Dr. Rohr decided to keep her sedated for an extra couple of days to lessen the chance of her waking up with severe hallucinations, which is a side effect of the ketamine.

The good thing is that she's in a deep sleep and is unaware of what she's going through.

  • Terry,
I'm sorry to hear about the "glitch". At least Alessa was able to benefit by getting an additional day of Ketamine. Hang in there.

  • Been there. So disappointing, but this will be taken care of. Just know that Dr. Rohr et al are so experienced. Once they know what they're dealing with, they handle complications as well as anyone possibly could. Alessa's in supremely capable hands. I know how hard it is when you're expecting things to happen one way, and suddenly you're facing something new. But she will be fine; it's just so hard watching.
Keep thinking positively, b/c any negative thoughts will just zap your energy for no reason. This is, as you put it, just a "glitch". Soon she will awaken, and then you'll need your energy!
Loooking forward to hearing good news soon!! You will soon have your daughter back!!! I'll say a prayer for Alessa tonight and call you tomorrow. We tried 2 reach u from the office this afternoon. I'll call you tomorrow.
